The "Simple Life" star has dropped her appeal of a 45-day turned 23-day jail sentence that was handed down earlier this month as a result of her violating her probation for alcohol-related reckless driving.

According to court documents obtained by "E! News," Hilton's attorney Richard Hutton filed the abandonment of appeal Thursday on the heiress' request.

The decision to face up to her court-ordered time behind bars is an abrupt about-face from how Hilton initially took her sentence but is in keeping with the socialite's newfound contriteness in the face of her punishment.

Just hours after the May 4 hearing in which she was sentenced for driving on a suspended license, Hilton's then-attorney, Howard Weitzman, filed the appeal, calling her 45-day sentence "inappropriate" and "ludicrous."

University of Oklahoma researchers have investigated a new variant of multidimensional hypercubes as computational elements of nanocomputers: the "M-hypercube," which could provide a higher-dimensional layout to support three-dimensional integrated circuits and the quantum properties of nanocomputers.The unique structure of hypercubes provides a massively parallel, distributed processing architecture with simple, robust communication linkages, able to count single electrons, and allow for parallel computing, reversibility, locality, and a three-dimensional architecture.M-hypercubes contain two types of nodes: state nodes, which are embedded on the vertices of the M-hypercubes; and transmission nodes, which are embedded in the middle of the links between state nodes. With search engine privacy growing as a hotbutton issue, Microsoft announced Sunday that it is instituting an "enhanced set of privacy principles" for its Live Search and online-advertising technologies. The privacy measures parallel some of those taken recently by Google and Ask.com.

When a user searches on Live Search, some information, such as a machine-identifiable piece of software known as a "cookie," is retained to assist in targeted advertising. Microsoft's new privacy steps include setting an 18-month time limit on cookie IDs and other identifiers so that the data will become anonymous unless users opt in.

Microsoft's chief privacy strategist, Peter Cullen, said in a statement that it is "critical" for the company to evolve its privacy principles. He added that "keeping these issues as simple as possible for consumers is the best approach," so that, for instance, "anonymous should mean anonymous." Microsoft also asked that the search industry meet to set standards.

Unique Identifiers

Much of Microsoft's new privacy efforts revolve around unique identifiers, such as cookies. Matching up what you search with who you are is increasingly becoming a concern for privacy advocates. In 2006, for example, AOL researchers mistakenly posted data on some 650,000 searches. New York Times reporters were able to track down a single searcher on the basis of the posted information.

Microsoft said that when it begins to offer ads for third-party Web sites, it will let users opt out of behavioral targeting, which is pegged to "personal and unique" identifiers. Microsoft also said it will store Live Search query terms separately from any account information that identifies a registered user, to avoid the "unauthorized correlation of the data" by ers.

The European Union cleared the way Monday for Intel Corp. and Switzerland's STMicroelectronics NV to combine troubled units that make a type of flash memory used primarily in cell phones.

The two chip makers and private equity firm Francisco Partners will form a new company that will buy up Intel's and STMicro's NOR flash businesses, a technology that has been steadily losing ground to a cheaper alternative, NAND, for digital cameras and music players.

The European Commission concluded that the joint venture would not cause antitrust problems because strong rivals existed for both types of flash memory and customers would be able to choose from a sufficient number of alternative vendors.

Intel, which is the world's largest semiconductor company and sells more than three-quarters of all microprocessors that run computers using Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system, will receive $432 million in cash for its NOR flash unit.

STMicroelectronics, which makes the chips that sense motion in Apple Inc.'s iPhone and Nintendo Co.'s Wii video game console, will sell for $468 million its entire flash memory operation, including the NOR division and its stake in a joint venture with Hynix Semiconductor Inc. for NAND flash chips.

Overall revenues for NOR flash chips were $8.3 billion last year, but the entire segment was unable to turn a profit, according to market researcher iSuppli Corp.

The units owned by Intel and STMicroelectronics made $3.6 billion combined in sales last year.

Until now, Intel has stood by its unprofitable NOR business. The division was losing about $150 million a year before Intel formed a joint venture in 2005 with Micron Technology Inc. to produce NAND flash. The company's preliminary financial statements showed revenue of $14.8 billion, profit of $733 million, and earnings per share of $0.32 for the period ended August 3. The figures exceeded expectations on Wall Street.

Chairman, founder, and CEO Michael Dell, who returned in January to help steer the company's turnaround, said in a statement that Dell has "made progress" and that the turnaround is still "in the early stages."

Competition, Investigation

Dell is looking to get back on top after facing stiff competition from Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. Dell remains in first place for PCs in the U.S., but has been edged out by HP for worldwide sales.

In addition to facing stiff competition, Dell has had to weather an internal investigation that turned up details about executives manipulating financial reports. An investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission is underway, and Dell has said it will restate more than four years of financials.

Undeterred by these issues, Dell undertook several strategic steps during the second quarter. These included the launch of the Vostro brand of notebook and desktop computers for small businesses, the introduction of the ultrathin XPS M1330 notebook, and debut of new Inspiron notebooks with eight color choices.

When Best Buy Co. Inc. bought the Geek Squad five years ago, the two companies pledged to "protect the world from the assault of computerized technology." Geek Squad "agents" even wore badges and drove vehicles resembling police cars.

But as this squadron of techno-nerds has mushroomed into the largest collection of computer troubleshooters in the world, it has become increasingly difficult for the firm to police its own employees.

In recent months, allegations of agents copying pornography, music and alluring photos from customers' computers have circulated on the Internet. Some bloggers now call it the "Peek Squad."

"Any attractive young woman who drops off her computer with the Geek Squad should assume that her photos will be looked at," said Brett Haddock, a former Geek Squad technician.

Best Buy says that any problems are caused by rogue employees and are not systemic. But in light of allegations, the company will increase its monitoring of technicians.

It insists customers' personal photos and other files are safer with the Geek Squad than with most independent computer repair services. The company has rigorous privacy and security measures in place, including checking workers' bags before and after work.

Rapid Growth

But some current and former Geek Squad agents say the intrusions into customer privacy are symptomatic of a larger problem: that Geek Squad's rapid growth has compromised its service quality and consistency. Some agents said they are graded more on the number of services sold than on the quality of their repairs.

In 1994, Robert Stephens started Geek Squad with $200 and a bicycle to take him from job to job. Eight years later, Stephens sold the firm to Best Buy for $3 million. At the time, the firm had just 50 employees; there are now about 11,000.

Earlier this week, Microsoft Windows watcher Winbeta.org posted an e-mail from the software giant's Windows Driver Kit team that ended up launching a media feeding frenzy on news sites around the world. According to Microsoft's e-mail to the site, the release of a beta version of the first service pack for Vista was available for download.

The resulting avalanche of press reports from around the globe forced Microsoft to clarify the report by saying that the earlier e-mail was actually designed to announced the availability of the beta of Windows Server 2008 instead of Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), and that the confusion was due to a typo.

Michael Silver, research vice president in Gartner's Client Computing group, said that although Vista SP1 is not yet ready to roll, the sooner Microsoft releases it, the sooner businesses that look at SP1 as an important milestone will start adopting Vista.

If Microsoft gets SP1 out this year, he said, it could buy Microsoft an extra quarter of adoption in businesses, Silver explained. "That may not fuel a lot of extra revenue, but it helps improve the perception of Vista," he noted.

No Impact on Mainstream Users

In its latest update on the software giant's compliance with antitrust issues, the U.S. Department of Justice noted that Microsoft had agreed to release the beta of Vista SP1 this year. Microsoft has confirmed its commitment to a beta release in 2007, but did not commit to a specific date.

It has been standard practice for Microsoft to issue service packs for fixing security holes and other bugs that the company identifies after each operating system's official release. But now that the software giant has moved to a monthly update system -- commonly known as Patch Tuesday -- the pressure for getting Vista SP1 quickly out the door. Hard Drive Is Cheaper But Slower

Overall, I liked the Q1 Ultra. It won't replace your desktop or notebook PC, but it could serve as a nice adjunct for times when you merely want to surf the Web, type out short e-mails or instant messages, make an Internet phone call, or view pictures on a screen larger than that available on most cell phones.

The base model of the Q1 Ultra substitutes a physical 60-gigabyte hard drive for the fast but expensive flash-based drive on the original Q1. Samsung offers an upgrade to a 32GB flash drive as a substitute for the physical drive, though that will add about $700 to the overall price.

Though it saves on cost, the downside to a physical drive is that it's more prone to damage and it drains more energy as the disk platter spins up and down to access data. Samsung tries to compensate by using one of Intel's new ultralow-power processors, but that entails its own benefits and disadvantages.
